Getting Started with Microsoft Word

Opening Microsoft Word
- Click the Start Menu → search for Word →
open it.
- You’ll see the Start Screen:
- Blank Document
(to start fresh)
- Templates
(pre-designed formats like resumes, letters, etc.)

Word Interface Overview
When a new document opens, the interface
looks like this:
- Title Bar
(top): Shows the document’s name (e.g., Document1).
- Quick Access Toolbar:
Small icons for Save, Undo, Redo.
- Ribbon Tabs:
Home, Insert, Design, Layout, etc.
- Ribbon:
The toolbar under the tabs (contains buttons & tools).
- Workspace:
Where you type your content.
- Status Bar
(bottom): Displays page number, word count, zoom controls.

The Ribbon in MS Word
The Ribbon is divided into Tabs
and Groups:
Common
Tabs:
- Home:
Font, paragraph alignment, styles.
- Insert:
Pictures, tables, shapes, charts.
- Design:
Themes, colors, and document formatting.
- Layout:
Margins, orientation, spacing.
- References:
Table of contents, footnotes, citations.
- Review:
Spelling check, comments, track changes.
- View:
Page layout, zoom, rulers.

Basic Tools in MS Word
Here are the essential tools
beginners use most:
- Save:
Ctrl + S
(or File → Save).
- Copy:
Ctrl + C,
Cut: Ctrl + X, Paste: Ctrl
+ V.
- Bold / Italic / Underline: Ctrl + B / I / U.
- Font Size & Style:
Change how your text looks.
- Paragraph Alignment:
Left, Center, Right, Justify.
- Bullets & Numbering: Create lists.
- Insert Picture:
Go to Insert → Pictures.
- Spell Check:
Under Review → Spelling & Grammar.

Practice Example
1.
Open a Blank Document.
2.
Type: “My First Word Document.”
3.
Change the font to Arial,
size 18, and make it Bold.
4.
Center-align the text.
5.
Save the file as First_Document.docx.
