Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program used to organize, analyze, and present data. Before using it, you need to understand its interface (the screen layout).

Excel Start Screen
- When you open Excel, you see:
- Blank Workbook
→ to start fresh.
- Templates
→ pre-designed sheets (e.g., budgets, calendars).

Main Parts of the Excel Interface
a)
Title Bar
- At the very top.
- Shows the name of your workbook (e.g., Book1.xlsx).
- Contains Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons.
b)
Quick Access Toolbar
- Small icons above the Ribbon.
- Gives shortcuts for Save, Undo, Redo.
c)
Ribbon Tabs & Ribbon
- Tabs at the top: Home, Insert, Page Layout,
Formulas, Data, Review, View.
- The Ribbon (below the tabs) contains buttons and tools
grouped together.
- Example: Home Tab → Font group, Alignment group,
Number group.
d)
Formula Bar
- Found below the Ribbon.
- Displays the content of the active cell (text, numbers,
or formulas).
- You can type/edit data here.
e)
Name Box
- Shows the address of the active cell (e.g., A1, B5).
f)
Worksheet Area (Cells)
- The main grid made of rows (1, 2, 3…) and columns
(A, B, C…).
- The intersection is called a cell (e.g., B2).
- Each workbook has worksheets (Sheet1, Sheet2…)
shown at the bottom.
g)
Status Bar
- At the bottom of the window.
- Shows details like average, sum, or count of
selected data.
- Contains Zoom controls to adjust view size.

1.
Open a Blank Workbook in
Excel.
2.
Click on cell A1 → type your
name.
3.
Notice how the Name Box shows A1
and the Formula Bar shows your text.
4.
Save the file as Excel_Practice.xlsx.
Understanding the Excel interface
is the first step before learning formulas, formatting, and data
analysis.
